Short answer - SLR for people who are serious about photography, all in one compact device designed for casual users.
Long answer - an SLR is capable of better pictures of some technical reasons, but requires that the user knows what he's doing. SLR seems difficult to use for beginners and require more maintenance. They are also expensive and fragile. The Reflex is ideal for a beginner, if you really want to learn photography and is responsible enough to read the user manual.
